This is a book of photographs and poetry about what it’s like to live on the South Shore. The river defines us, it’s the horizontal line that guides us when we lose our way. These photographs and poems peels back the stories of Windsor’s neighbourhoods. Photographs by Marty Gervais, the Poet Laureate Emeritus for the City of Windsor, and the poems are from the a group of Poet Laureates from Windsor, Brantford, and Sudbury. These writers bring their experience with Windsor to the work.
The river and woodlands and factories and bridges and zigzagging creeks and church steeples and railway lines and war time houses and coffee shops and open windows and the straight lines of the horizon and open flat fields of prairie grass. This is Windsor. This is our song, or album, or journal, our way of seeing the world that sets us apart from the rest of the country. We live in a kind of upside down world looking north to the United States when the rest of the country speaks about what’s below the border. We are below the border. We are the Deep South. And we are the first to see the Spring, and the last to see the Fall…
