Poetry Advent Calendar Day 16

“strangers at the table” is another piece taken from Mary Ann Mulhern’s Brides in Black. This poem describes the homecoming of a nun after spending years in the convent away from her family, something we can all relate to in lockdown.
strangers at the table
after twenty years
sister st. matthew
returns home
as helen sims
the house she left
seems smaller
as if winds
pressed against walls
snow and ice
flattened the roof
soaked through memories
of childhood
parents and siblings
strangers at the table
communion of silence
helen’s smile missing
from photos held in wooden frames
marriages birthdays baptisms
